![]() ![]() Remember to put on your 4-Dimensional thinking cap! There’s a deeper level to the lore that you can find if you go looking for it (there are a lot of interesting theories online as to the true identity of Rat-Man) and this game is no different. The Portal series has never really had much of an in-depth story, with most of the narrative basically revolving around trying to destroy various maniacal robots. However, it would have been nice to have seen some new particle effects or maybe some nicer lighting around the Portals you’ll be shooting all over the place. That thing was hardly a dedicated gaming rig. I remember being able to run Portal 2 on the laptop I used for college 8 years ago. Portal 2, much like GLaDOS herself run on something not much more sophisticated than a potato. It’s great insofar as it allows basically anyone now to play. This is a good and a bad thing if you ask me. Portal Reloaded doesn’t touch the old-school Aperture aesthetic, which is a nice touch, but it also doesn’t do anything to update the graphics at all. On the visual side, it’s business as usual too. What are the visuals like? This is a potato battery a toy for children! And now she lives in it! Suffice to say the standard gameplay and level design is here again and you’ll need to remember how to think with Portals in order to succeed. This would mean that the item ceased to exist in the present so couldn’t exist in the future. For instance, you can bring a cube or turret from the future to the present, but you can’t bring the same item from the present to the future. Likewise, the laws of causality will come into play and prohibit you from doing certain things with certain objects in some chambers. For instance, some mechanisms or features of a particular chamber may be decayed or dysfunctional in the future, while they’re pristine and in perfect working order in the present. ![]() The Time Portal is key to solving every puzzle and it brings with it a number of interesting twists on the standard layout of each chamber. You’ll be picking up weighted storage cubes to place them on switches, you’ll be destroying turrets (while they lament their fate) and you’ll be creating lots and lots of portals. The only difference is the aforementioned Time Portal. Since this is a mod for Portal 2 the gameplay is essentially identical to the previous entries in the franchise. ![]() ![]() Portal Reloaded literally adds another dimension to the series. The Green portal doesn’t allow you to access a far-off area in the Testing Chamber, it allows you to travel 20 years forward (and backward) in time. This game gives you your normal Orange and Blue portals that allow you to pass from one area to another instantaneously, but this time you also get a rectangular Green portal. You are an anonymous Test Subject in the long-abandoned Aperture Science testing facility and you have been tasked with assessing the effects of the latest in Portal technology. The basic premise of the game is identical to that of its predecessors. Even if you don’t have it yet, Portal 2 is €8 on Steam so it’s hardly going to break the bank. Portal Reloaded came out on Steam a couple of weeks ago and is free to download for anyone who owns Portal 2. ![]()

Odysseus’ narration translated by Richard Lattimore is, Invoking the dead, he sees the dread shades approaching. But first, Odysseus walks in darkness.ĭisembarking, Odysseus digs a pit and pours a libation to the dead. Eventually Homer starkly contrasts the darkness with the bright spiritual themes we will come to see in this book. ![]() Structured chiastically, the opening lines of book XI begin and end with images of darkness: as the dark ship sets sail, the journeying ways are darkened, and Odysseus and his companions arrive at the place of νὺξ ὀλοὴ-deadly, perpetual night. Odysseus travels to where the ancients believed the very boundary of the earth existed, a place where the sun cannot shine. Instructed by Circe, Odysseus has learned that he cannot go directly home but must first journey to the underworld to consult the prophet Tiresias, who alone can tell him the way home. In general, a translator will prioritize certain elements above others, for English cannot fully capture the depth of Homeric Greek, and the translator must make concessions wisely.Ī walk through a selection of the Odyssey, comparing translations to the original Greek, may help us see how choices of translation illuminate different aspects of the original poetry and may ultimately help us select translations suited to our particular purposes.Īt the heart of Homer’s Odyssey lies the iconic descendus ad inferos, the journey to the kingdom of the dead. His careful control of the elements of poetry-word, meter, and content-leave the translator a great challenge: how to render these three elements in a way that conveys the greatest poetic knowledge of the original. Homeric Greek can do much with few words, allowing for poetry of depth and dimension dressed in simplicity and economy. Homer’s poetic craft is masterful to the point of mystery. Even when a translator desires a precise and literal rendering, fidelity to the complexity of Homeric poetry can be elusive. In bringing poetry into our native language, each translator will choose how tightly to tether to the original. Like Odysseus, the translator has a preeminent goal: to bring a work home. While the poet deals in truth, he does not necessarily utilize literal facts. Desiring to understand and experience the original to the greatest extent possible, we ask of our translation: Is it faithful? In so doing, we ask the same question of our translators that has been asked for generations of Odysseus: Is the poet faithful to the truth?-a question especially fitting to the tradition of the Odyssey. Those who read the work in translation encounter another poet: the translator. In doing so, Odysseus reveals to his audience that he, like Homer, is a poet. The arch-poet Homer turns the story over to his hero, Odysseus, and it is Odysseus himself who tells of his voyages. ![]() ![]() The great narrative of the Odyssey is not entirely told by Homer. This means that the farther you place your fluorescent object from the tube, the less UV it will receive and, consequently, the weaker the effect will be. Think of a flashlight in a dark room, it produces a brilliant white circle of light but in a sunlit room you'd barely notice it.Īlso, realize that the light from a fluorescent black light tube becomes weaker as it travels out from the fixture. Because fluorescent paints and dyes don't emit a lot of light compared to a ceiling lamp, their glow can be diminished or lost altogether if there is too much visible light in the room. ![]() When you're setting up a black light effect it's important to remember how UV-reactive products work in order to get the best effect out of them. Phosphors are used in fluorescent lamps, televisions, even laundry detergent! They're also responsible for the groovy, glowing effects you see with fluorescent paint. Okay, so what's a phosphor? It’s important to note also that there are two versions of this game. Nonetheless it hits all the right beats for a moderately compelling narrative that will keep you engaged from start to finish. The story itself isn’t half bad either, though at times it feels a tad stretched and at other times a little obvious. The writers over at Lime Turtle deserve a pat on the back for a job well done in that regard. One thing I particularly appreciated about Nexomon was the sense of humour and regular tongue in cheek fourth wall breaks that make fun of RPGs and Pokémon games both. These plus a number of other differences make Nexomon very straightforward and easy to understand, which will be refreshing for some, boring for others but definitely easier for new players to the genre to parse. There’s no natures, genders, EVs, IVs, egg moves, TMs or HMs. Each Nexomon is identical to every other Nexomon of its same species. There are only 7 types, and the type matchups are very balanced without being even a teeny bit complex. How does it compare to Pokémon? I hear you Pokémon old timers practically shouting from the back. The soundtrack isn’t half bad either, being occasionally somewhat at odds with the enthusiastic and positive appearance of the game by being serious and deep, but also delving right back into cheerful again with ease. It’s got mildly cutesy graphics that are just cool enough to still catch the eye of 12 year old boys everywhere, but also vibrant and vivid enough to keep the eye excited. Nexomon is a light, linear RPG about finding, catching and battling monsters. And gosh darn if it isn’t halfway decent indeed. to create a halfway decent Pokémon clone.
